Day 21 Fasting fleshly solutions. John 18:1-11

Malchus got up that morning had his coffee, kissed his wife and played for a few minutes with his children. Now it was time to go serve the High Priest. The next thing he knew they were joined by the Chief Priests, the Pharisees and a Roman Cohort. They all arrived at an olive garden (not the restaurant, but a real garden) it was there they arrested Jesus.

A lot was going on the soldiers said they were looking for Jesus, Jesus said  “I AM” and all the soldiers fell backward on the ground. There was all kind of noise and confusion, then Peter took matters into his own hands and pursued a fleshly solution. Peter swung his sword through the air, and off came Malchus’s ear landing on the ground near the feet of Jesus. Jesus then calmly healed Malchus’s ear, rebuked Peter and told him he had accepted the cup from His Father.

Sometimes when we read this story we are appalled, but on the other hand how often do we pursue fleshly solutions of our own. It may not be as crazy as cutting off someones ear, but fleshly none the less. Today on our final day of our Daniel Fast, let’s all fast fleshly solutions, asking instead for the wisdom of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives.
