Leading People to Jesus: Simplify and Execute your Process of Evangelism

Evangelism, what a scary word…

Evangelism, is a word that scares many Christians. They don’t know how to start the conversation, they are afraid of rejection, they feel unqualified, they may feel like they are imposing on the person, and on it goes.

Evangelism has taken on many forms over the last 50 years that I have been saved. There was the door to door approach, there was the Evangelism Explosion approach (a canned conversation where you say certain things and they respond, you then respond with lines you have memorized), there was the Get Smart, Get Saved button campaign, there was the street preaching approach, there was the random acts of kindness approach, there was the intellectual approach, there was the “cold call” approach; that is walking up to complete strangers to tell them about Jesus, there was and has always been the pulpit approach, there was the passive approach used in the workplace or your kid’s playground, there was the artistic approach which we used for many years in promoting Christian Concerts in the 1970’s (that is a whole blog of it’s own), there was the tract approach (I have seen good ones and I have seen horrible ones), and now of course there is the internet approach.

Finding what works for you

So what is the best approach for you? Some of that depends on how you are wired. I have a friend who is an Uber-extrovert who has never met a stranger, he goes right up to perfect strangers and engages them in conversations about Jesus, he has great success because he is likable and a natural conversationist.

Maybe you are more of an introvert… then the above would not be the best approach for you, the key is knowing yourself and asking the Holy Spirit to work with you and your personality. By the way, I believe the Holy Spirit is the key to successful evangelism. Allowing Him to lead you to the people, opening the door for you to share your love for Jesus and inviting them to do the same.

“The key is knowing yourself and asking the Holy Spirit to work with you and your personality.”

So what is the right approach, there is no right approach, it is what is right for you. God loves our individuality and He made each of us different for a reason, the the worst mistake we can make in evangelism is putting on someone else’s armor (the reference here is to King Saul offering his armor to David when he faced Goliath, it fit Saul, but it did not fit David).

Wear your own armor

The key is to simplify your approach by knowing what works best for you,  then execute it when the Holy Spirit opens the door.

I have found that it is hard to argue with a testimony, if you just tell someone how God has changed your life and allow the Holy Spirit to bring conviction to them, then you get to pray with them to accept Christ, no hard work, no sweat, no anxiety, just tell your story.

I came to Christ because someone told me God is love, I had never heard that before and I had no real context for love, so it was the right bait for the fisherman who brought me into the kingdom.

So in closing, be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and allow Him to use your personality to share God’s love, remember it is not a notch on your belt, it is another soul saved from Hell.
