Day 13 Fasting the temporal. Matthew 24:1-2

We refer to Matthew 24-25 as he Olivet Discourse because it takes place on the Mount of Olives. But the first two verses tell us that Jesus came out of the temple on His way to the mount when he referenced the temple itself. He predicts the destruction of this glorious temple, which was the centerpiece of Jewish life. He told them there would not be one stone sitting on another, total destruction, this would indeed happen just 40 years later.

The Jewish nation had put their entire trust and focus on the temporal building, and although we don’t worship buildings today, we often put our trust in temporal things. It may be money, it may be position, it may be things, it may be relationships, but they are all temporal, just dust passing away. Today is a good day to fast the temporal and fix our eyes on the eternal.

Look around you, everything you see has an expiration date including you. All will pass away, nothing is eternal but God and you spirit. Spend your time, energy and money chasing the eternal and release the temporal as Bishop Hooker said in the late 1800’s “hold all things lightly, for the are waning for eternity.”
