21 Day Fast Towards Divine Nature

Day 3 Fasting a love of things. Matthew 19:16-26

This is one of the saddest stories in the Bible, the rich young ruler. At first he seems to have a spiritual appetite when he inquires of Jesus about obtaining eternal life. But when it gets down to the nitty gritty , he walks away with a pocket full of money and and empty soul. He loved things and the money that would buy him more things. 

Jesus speaks with him about obeying the commandments which he claims he has, but then he makes the mistake of asking Jesus, what he was still lacking. Then Jesus brings the boom down, sell all you own and give your possessions to the poor. What? Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea how much money I have? Do you know all the things I own? Have you any idea how much property is in my name? 

Jesus would say in another place, “What profits a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his own soul?” Things and money can be such a trick of the enemy to keep us from obtaining not just eternal life but also  the joy and happiness that goes with a heart free from the love of stuff. 

How is your fast coming, today is a good day to fast the love of things.
